Mollie Merchant

Mollie Merchant

I first met Mollie when she was a member of St Andrew’s Chelmsford Mothers’ Union. She was also the Deanery Prayer Rep when we had Diocesan “departments” where the meetings were attended by representatives from each deanery. At the time I was Chelmsford’s Presiding Member (now known as Deanery Chairs) and she was a valuable member of the deanery team who kept us aware of prayer needs and provided themes for us to take back to our branches to pray about at our meetings.

She produced many Mothers’ Union banners for local churches and one went to Jamaica and another to Madagascar. Examples of her work including altar frontals and banners can still be seen at her home church of St Andrew’s Chelmsford and were on show at her funeral.

When St Andrew’s branch closed Mollie joined us at the Cathedral branch and continued to come to afternoon meetings whenever her health allowed. She had been a member for nearly 70 years. Elizabeth Marshall
