Ash Wednesday

Ash Wednesday Ashes for you.

Ash Wednesday Ashes for you.

Are you having a zoom Ash Wednesday service today? If so, it goes without saying that there is no way the vicar will be able to anoint your forehead with ashes, but you can make your own ash that can be blessed during your zoom service and you can symbolically anoint your own forehead with the ash. Although the majority of us Mothers’ Union members will know how to make ash there may be some that don’t so I thought I would put a short article up for those DIY enthusiasts…

Most of us save the palm cross that was given to us last Palm Sunday, if you still have it you can take it and burn it in a metal bowl or saucepan being very careful not to set light to it near anything flammable or if there are children around… Once the cross or crossed have burned down, let them cool off somewhere safe. Once the ashes are cold, tip them into a bowl or pestle and mortar and grind the ashes into dust with the pestle or with the back of a spoon or a sharp knife. Once done you can either use them dry or put a drip or two of oil on them and mix them to a paste. You can then apply them to yourself at the appropriate moment during your zoom service…

Look out for our Seven Days of Prayer that will be uploaded – on Sunday 28th March until 8th March when I will upload an article about International Women’s Day -
