Mary Sumner Day Celebration

Mary Sumner Day Celebration

I am sure that those of you who attended will agree how enjoyable it was to be able to celebrate the one hundredth anniversary of the death of our much-revered founder of the Mothers’ Union, Mary Sumner… 9th August 21 was a lovely day, after some heavy morning rain we were blessed with the warm sun streaming through the Cathedral windows and what a wonderful opportunity for many of us to be able to meet together at last, after the restrictions that had been imposed on us for so long owing to the Covid 19 pandemic.

Following the welcome and call to worship we sang the opening hymn ‘Great is thy Faithfulness’ even through restricting masks, it sounded good. The New Testament reading came from Hebrews 12: 1-2 and the Gospel reading was from Luke 10: 1-9. There was no sermon preached but we were given some quiet reflective time in which to ponder on the Mary Sumner Day Collect and the two reading. We then reaffirmed the vision and mission of the Mothers’ Union, reminding us how important it is to uphold our special tasks that of love, respect and the flourishing of relationships through prayer, and our special Mission to show our Christian faith by the transformation of communities worldwide. Following the blessing we said Grace together then sang the final hymn ‘Lord, for the years.’ Beautiful…

At the end of the Service Judith Meaden our President came forward and thanked all those people who had helped make our lovely service so special…

After the service we were offered a drink and a special MU cake for us to take away – we could also purchase some MU cards, etc…

Mary Sumner Prayer: All this day, O lord, let me touch as many lives as possible for thee; and every life I touch, do thou by thy spirit quicken, whether through the word I speak, the prayer I breathe, or the life I live. Amen
