In 653 St Cedd was sent by Bishop Finan of Lindisfarne to tend to the spiritual needs of the people of Essex he left Lindisfarne by sea and came ashore at Bradwell-on-Sea where he built his Cathedral of St Peters on the foundations of a Roman fort, where the gatehouse had been it became known as St Peter-on-the-Wall.
