Fresh Fruit, so good for you.

Fresh Fruit, so good for you.

I honestly believe that if we could look back at stone-age peoples’ diet we would find that, apart from the odd animal that was caught, cooked, and consumed, most of their food would come from forests, bushes, trees, hedges and fields. After all, fruit might drop but it can’t run so anything growing would be easy to pick and eat… Fruit has all the goodness our bodies need to grow and stay healthy. Full of vitamins, minerals, fiber, calories, natural sugar, natural chemicals, in fact, everything our bodies need, to sustain us and keep us going to do God’s work…

Adam took of the apple and he ate: Genesis: Fruit: Eve’s fault of course, but I bet there are not many women who don’t just love the sight of a beautiful bowl overflowing with fruit! So, it stands to reason that whilst men love to get their hands on a juicy steak, most women try to entice their other-halves to partake of a healthy piece of fruit. Last month we looked at salad vegetables, food items that contain some of the lowest amounts of calories. By the way, I hope you managed to use up any salad vegetables that were left over from your shop, as opposed to tossing it in the bin. The majority of fruit is higher in calories than salad vegetables as they contain natural sugars, etc. But Wow! Are they good to eat, and good for your health. Yes! Again, no fruit need ever be wasted All fruit including soft fruits and berries are excellent for you skin, hair, teeth, nails and bones, and they can be stored up in different ways so that nothing goes to waste. All shop-bought fruit needs to be washed thoroughly before eating to get rid of any added chemicals, even so-called ‘organic’ fruit as you don’t know how many hands it has gone through before you buy it... Eat all soft fruit as soon as possible, or freeze, juice or jam it. Most berries are great when thawed out but strawberries do have to be use in crumbles, cakes or blended and used as a sauce, or for smoothies. Apples and pears can be cooked and frozen, again, no need to peel as all the goodness is just under the skin, and if the fruit is tart add a handful of dried fruit to the saucepan instead of sugar. By the way, ALL apples can be cooked and used in deserts and pies, not just Bramley’s. Don’t forget to save the cooking water, strain and bottle for ‘real’ apple or pear juice, should keep in the fridge for days. Oranges, grapefruit, lemons, etc. can be peeled, chopped, de-pipped and frozen, as with most other fruit. Bananas, should be eaten before going mottled (wrapping the stumps with silver foil will make them last a bit longer), Bananas don’t freeze well but you can mash them, freeze them and use them in cakes when you have time. Grapes can be frozen whole and they look fantastic on a cheese board, where they can be eaten still very cold like ice-lolly-drops – Yum

Church Kitchen: If and when you have children visiting the church, it’s better to offer some fruit for them to eat as opposed to biscuits and cakes, plus, you can eat any leftovers and not put on weight!
